Capodimonte porcelain: history and style

Capodimonte Porcelain owes its name to the homonymous hilly area of Naples, where in 1743 King Charles of Bourbon and his wife Maria Amalia of Saxony founded the Royal Factory of Capodimonte , driven by the desire to make porcelain similar to the German one. produced in the Meissen factory (the "Dresden porcelain").

The apex of the splendor of the Bourbon manufacture was reached in the last twenty years of the eighteenth century: in that period splendid table services, statuettes and ornaments were created which stood out for their elegant and refined shape and the originality of the decorations.

In numerous Neapolitan museums such as the National Museum of Capodimonte, the Duca di Martina Museum, the Filangieri Museum and the Diego Aragona Pignatelli Cortes Museum, it is possible to admire the most precious porcelains made in Capodimonte and in the rest of Italy. History and tradition come together here, attracting tourists from all over the world every year.

This style has inspired our manufactures for over fifty years; we grasp its meaning and taste to produce precious and unique objects, in full respect of the Italian ceramic tradition .

Capodimonte ceramics: the manufacturing

Creating Capodimonte-style ceramics is an elaborate process that requires long execution times and experience.

It all starts with casting into the mould. The objects that we obtain from the forging are then finished by hand; in fact, in this phase we eliminate the imperfections due to the division of the mold and we apply the decorations and details, such as the flowers. The skill and delicacy with which our expert florists compose decorative roses always end up captivating the guests who come to visit us in the laboratory!

We then proceed with drying , with which we eliminate the water inside the earthenware by evaporation. Then follows the first firing in a trolley oven at 1050°, or " biscuit ". It takes 12 hours to reach the temperature, and at least 24 hours to go down. This phase is very important: if the right cooking times are not respected, the piece risks breaking.

We then paint the biscuit that we have obtained entirely by hand, with a brush. Subsequent immersion in crystalline tanks , a transparent vitreous coating, allows us to highlight the decoration making it brilliant.

We then put the piece back in the oven for a second firing , at a lower temperature (the “ glazing ”).

If we apply a further gold decoration , we proceed with a third firing, called " third fire ". Once this phase is completed, our ceramic is ready!
